State of the Matto (Jan-2020)

2019 had some rough spots, but I overcame them. Now, I’m looking forward with a fresh outlook.

In 2019 I wrote a book and started its sequel, I started world-building a fantasy realm, and I started to learn game design by inventing some space-themed board games. I had hoped to finish the sequel, but delays and shifting priorities slid it backward on the timeline.

My author platform (website, mailing list service, etc) is expensive, and it’s not working for me. I followed the guidance of ‘pros’ in the field, but I just couldn’t adapt myself to their workflow. I spent much much more on maintaining an email list than I received in book sales, and that cannot continue. I’ll keep the list as is until I publish my new book, but then transition to a new system.

Physically, I’m in better shape today than I was 10 years ago. I’m in better shape today that I was in at any point over the last 10 years. Creatively, I’m also in the best shape, and my skills as a writer have also budded.

I don’t care much for dates and associated resolutions. I believe in personal resolutions made at any time in order to improve oneself. While I just went through a sort of physical and mental transformation, I’m very excited for the next phase; the creative transformation. That one will be slower, but I’m sure will have a huge impact. It’s what I’m working on now.
