No matter if you’re writing non-fiction, sci-fi romance, or YA historical high fantasy, every author could benefit from having a writer’s spaceship.

We’re creative people, but we can be distracted. Sometimes, words don’t fly onto ‘the paper’ as often or as frequently as we like, and one solution I’ve come across is the author’s spaceship. The benefits are astronomical, haha, with only a little cost.
Of course I’m not actually talking about a physical rocketship with humanoid-passenger carrying abilities; I’m talking about a work area.
The idea is simple: you create a creative cockpit, where you strap yourself in for the great adventure of the day. You don’t watch videos on youtube, you don’t pay your bills, you don’t screw around on facebook. You create, you write, you do whatever creative work you do, and you do it in that spot. If you keep that cockpit special, used just for your creative expression, then it’ll always feel good to be in that space.
I live in Washington D.C., and space is a premium with a capitol $. Maybe it’s not practical to have a dedicated part of your home and computer, and I’m not saying you need that. Maybe you need a desk lamp that you only turn on when you’re in your spaceship. Maybe flicking the switch on the lamp is the ignition to the rocket, and you better be strapped in and ready for when that count-down completes!
I have a table I move my laptop onto to write. The rest of the time, I use the table for other things, and the laptop isn’t on it. When I place it down though, and pull my chair up, I get excited. I know that when I’m there, I can go anywhere I want to go, that I’m driving, and that it’s time to get to work. It’s been extremely successful for me, and I look forward to jumping into my rocketship, every day.
